Apprentice gains skills while researching CLOCS

CoTrain Apprentice Chris Waddell is currently working with Wates in their Bracknell site as a trainee Site Manager and has recently been asked to also take on the role of Logistics Manager. The role allows him to gain more experience on site and gives Chris a new set of responsibilities, such as supervising the gateman, setting out the correct procedures on site whilst ensuring these are being carried out, making sure drivers have the correct documentation and that deliveries are made at scheduled times.

Committed to this new role and after finding about the CLOCS National Standard, Chris is finding out how CLOCS (Construction Logistics and community Safety) could be used on the site in the future; researching and learning about the desired standard of safety and making sure the sites logistics plan matches up to the CLOCS Standard.

CLOCS is a National Standard that requires all stakeholders in construction to take responsibility for health & safety beyond the hoardings.  It demands collaborative action to prevent fatal or serious collisions between vehicles servicing construction projects and vulnerable road users; pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Chris has introduced various processes on site; eliminating hazards by design with things such as one-way systems, setting up designated unloading and loading areas, making sure ground checks are regularly done, ensuring it’s of the right quality, making sure the site is clearly signposted and clear of obstacles and that the construction logistics plan is being adhered to. Chris said, “The CLOCS scheme publicly demonstrates organisations commitment to eliminating collisions between HGV’s and vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists that currently result in 500 people being killed or seriously injured each year.” 

Chris continued, “The CLOCS scheme will significantly increase the safety of our site and will also give me a valuable understanding of what the standards are when it comes to the safety of logistics, of which I can take with me through my career in the construction industry. I am excited for the challenge and look forward to it when it is in full flow.”
