News: Multiple wins for CoTrain apprentices in April

29 May 2018

Apprentice of the month and two highly commended awards

We had some fantastic nominations submitted for the Apprentice of the Month for April , so we decided to award three apprentices! All had shown initiative, albeit from three different areas; namely Health and Safety, Operational and Commercial.

Apprentice of the month winner - Joe Morgan

(Photo - Jay Westrope, Carlton Site Foreman, Joe Morgan, Julian Carter)Joe is working with Carlton Civil Engineering as an Apprentice Groundworker. Nominated by Jamie McNamara, Contracts Manager with Carlton, he said that Joe continued to develop his skills as a groundworker, mastering substructure bricklaying and how to form a 1000mm diameter ring manhole. However outside of this, on the site where he was working, he noticed a number of vehicles reversing into the site without a banksman. Taking the initiative, he told the driver about the requirement and then proceeded to take ownership of the problem to bank the vehicles himself, thereby ensuring a safe working environment for himself and colleagues on the site.

Kevin Miskella, Director of Carlton, commented "We at Carlton Civil Engineering are so very proud of Joe’s recent achievement of being awarded Apprentice of the Month. Joe has proved himself to be a tremendous asset to our team, with his eagerness to learn, he is already showing his potential for the future using his training through the joint efforts of Co-train and Carlton Civil Engineering to best effect. Joe has excelled whilst with us on site, his natural ability to understand methods and practical application of tasks makes me feel he has a great future in Civil Engineering. Well done Joe, and well deserved !"

Highly commended - Ben Hatch

Photo - Julian Carter, Ben Hatch and Ian Budgen - Site ManagerBen, a University graduate, decided to pursue a career in the construction industry. Working on a BAM site in Southampton as a trainee Site Manager, one of Ben's weekly tasks is to submit a weekly document relating to Health and Safety. One issue that arose was that the Safe to Start form was not being completed correctly and to a satisfactory standard. Ben amended the document to ensure that the form provided more usable information which in turn has improved the standard of the submission. He has also taken on more responsibility and is not afraid to suggest areas for improvement to the site team, as well as taking the initiative on community engagements.

Highly commended - Josh Burns

Julian Carter, Josh Burns and Darren Wassell - Estimating ManagerThis is the 2nd time that Josh has been announced as a winner! Nominated by Phil McCabe and Darren Wassell of Midas, he is now keeping detailed records covering the supply chain at the preconstruction stage, allowing him to cross reference against those who respond to requests. This also allows him to be able to give better levels of feedback on their success across Midas' tenders, as well as being able to engage with Surveyors as to why orders were placed with particular companies who hadn't supported at a preconstruction stage.

This level of data collection is now being trialled locally with a view to rolling it out across the group.
