Health, Safety & Wellbeing

Type of organisation: Materials supplier – Logistics Team

Number of staff: >7,000

Tarmac is changing the way that they manage contracted drivers through an innovative smartcard technology that provides assurance of the safety and competency of their drivers. The OneCard system gives real time data about drivers and control site access requirements guaranteeing that training and qualifications are valid and relevant.

The OneCard system ensures that all operators are trained and up-to-date before beginning any job. This reduces the risk to anyone they may encounter and gives assurance to Tarmac, their customers and the communities in which they operate.

Having piloted the scheme in Summer 2017, it is Tarmac’s aim to bring all contracted hauliers online in 2018 and are rolling out the scheme nationally. 20 plants in the UK so far are live with the OneCard and there are 1550 cards in circulation. To date Tarmac have had 180 issues flagged with drivers that would have previously gone unnoticed under the old ‘paper’ system and have now received the required training. Data on drivers is now robust, secure and visible.

The winner in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing category will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster, London on the 28th of June 2018. For more information or to book a table, click here.
